RDI project to analyze urban mobility based on Big Data technology

The company is positioning itself in the use of new technologies with an ambitious project for Big Data analysis and processing. The platform will enable the anonymous viewing and analysis of routes completed by millions of commuters in the metropolitan area.

It has started to develop a platform to analyze mobility in urban surroundings, which will integrate the information generated by devices installed in the infrastructures, along with positioning data of telephone and mobile application users, to include open sources and social networks.

The project team has gathered mobility experts from the exploitation management and specialists in Big Data technology. Over this past year, resources have been assigned to initial studies and basic testing of the tool, which in the course of this year will materialize as a pilot project for Mexico City, one of the urban areas with the greatest mobility issues in the world.

The platform will be able to anonymously process information on user trips over time, with accuracy ranging between tens and hundreds of meters, thus providing a clear view of the city’s mobility and its evolution in time.

At present, 800,000 daily trips are under management by the company’s BI system, representing an annual data volume of less than 1 TB. When the platform is running at full speed, approximately 10 million daily trips will be analyzed, generating a monthly volume of information at source of more than 100 TB.

The ultimate aim is to improve awareness of urban areas, mobility patterns, groups with common types of conduct, and to generate alerts in special situations and advanced analysis tools. Thanks to this platform, concession operations may be optimized, investment projects analyzed and alternatives examined.

This development is designed to operate independently from the city where it is implemented; consequently, based on the pilot results obtained, the idea is to give the project an international scope in multiple urban surroundings.
